A host of community members gathered Monday at the Leeville Public Boat Launch to recognize the official completion of Phase 2 of the launch project—the Pavilion and Wheelchair Accessible Pier.

Led by District 9 Councilman Daniel Lorraine, Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle, Greater Lafourche Port Commission Executive Director Chett Chiasson, and Tourist Commission Director Timothy Bush, the gathering helped cut the ribbon for the official dedication of the Pavilion and Pier, the last puzzle pieces in the creation of the Leeville Public Launch.

President Cantrelle called the final phase a “hard fought battle” because of the difficulty in obtaining funding for the project.

He thanked the Port Commission and the Tourist Commission for their generosity in donating a great deal of the funding.

After the Parish lost $500,000 in State Capital Outlay money in 2016, the Port donated $166,000 and the Tourist Bureau put up $42,000 to help complete the project.

“It’s a great facility and I know people are going to enjoy it.  When people work hard and work hard together, we can achieve great things in this parish,” said Cantrelle.

Lorraine noted that the pier is lighted and the lights will be turned on for the first time Monday night.

“People have been using it at night even without the lights.  Wait till they see it tonight,” he said.

The launch is now essentially complete, with a total cost of around $1.3 million.

It has already hosted the Hobie World Kayak tournament in addition to other local events and will be an asset to the Leeville community.
