The West Larose vertical lift bridge on LA1 crossing the Intracoastal Canal will be closed continuously to vehicular traffic from 7:00 am on Monday, August 29 to 12:00 noon on Friday, September 2.

The South Central Planning and Development Commission is requesting public participation with input on the Lafourche Parish Transportation Plan. Meetings will be held in various places and times throughout the parish and your local knowledge and input would be appreciated as the plan is prepared.

With the flooding relief effort now shifting to rebuilding mode, the efforts to aid people impacted by the recent severe weather now shifts to an effort requiring more monetary means. Lafourche Parish individuals, businesses, organizations and schools have put forward a tremendous effort in the last week and have contributed an incredible amount of supplies to help our neighbors in need. Donation deliveries were made to Ascension, Livingston and Lafayette parishes. To that effort, we thank all who gave whatever they could to help.

Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle and Lafourche Parish Government announce that beginning today, August 15, donations are being accepted for flood victims of the unprecedented floods in neighboring parishes. “Through a coordinated effort with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and the City Of Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish is pleased to assist our neighbors in need,” said Cantrelle. Donations will be accepted at the Mathews Government Complex located at 4876 Louisiana Highway 1, Mathews, LA 70375. Hours for drop off are 8:00 am until 8:00 pm beginning August 15 and continuing until further notice.

Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle offered thanks Monday to the many parish employees who stepped up during the severe weather event late last week. “Thanks to our hard working parish employees including those in the Department of Public Works and the Department of Emergency Preparedness for their timely attention to all the issues that come up during severe weather. Their attention to detail keeps any problems from getting bigger,” Cantrelle said.

As of noon on Thursday, four streets have been reported as closed due to the heavy rainfall, all in the Thibodaux or Chackbay area. The roads currently closed are: Laurel Valley Road, Parish Road and Rienzi Drive in Thibodaux and South Sugarfield in Chackbay.

Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle was on hand Tuesday afternoon with officials from the South Lafourche Levee District and the Terrebonne Conservation and Levee District to see firsthand the progress being made on area levees. Cantrelle visited the site in lower Pointe aux Chenes where the “Reach K” segment of the Morganza to the Gulf project is set to begin in the next month as an approximate 1,800 foot section of levee will be upgraded with trucked in dirt to a near 10 foot elevation.

Lafourche Parish Government recently received a grant in the amount of $42,000 from the Bayou Lafourche Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (BLACVB) to go towards improvements at the Leeville fishing pier project. “This project serves as a fine example of the progress that can be made when various entities work together toward a common goal. It will boost the economy of Leeville and provide a space for citizens to enjoy some of Louisiana’s great natural resources,” said Cantrelle.

Lafourche Parish Government (LPG) recently signed agreements with various entities regarding the transportation, housing and feeding of evacuees in the event of a hurricane evacuation. The parish signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the City of Monroe to house evacuees from Lafourche Parish in the event of an evacuation.

Lafourche Parish Council on Tuesday night approved an ordinance that streamlines the organization and administration of parish recreation districts. The new ordinance abolishes the seven standing recreation boards and replaces them with a nine member parish wide recreation advisory board which will report to the parish council.
