Civil Service Testing Rules & Procedures

Once the deadline to apply for a position approaches, Civil Service will review all applications to determine whether or not each applicant qualifies for the position advertised. To be considered for many Lafourche Parish positions, applicants are required to take a Civil Service test.

If you do not qualify, you will receive a card in the mail stating that you did not qualify.

If you do qualify, you will receive a letter in the mail with a test date, time, and location. Only those who qualify for the position will be tested.

What are the Civil Service tests like?

Different kinds of tests are given for different types of jobs. All Civil Service test are "paper and pencil" multiple choice exams. Only those positions that require a typing score will be given a typing skills test on the computer.


How long do I have to take the test?

Civil Service tests are NOT timed. You will have about two hours to complete between 50 to 100 questions, depending on the type of job you are applying for.


What do I need to bring with me to testing?

A pictured identification card. You will be reminded on your letter to bring this with you.


What is a passing score and how long is it good for?

A score of 70% is needed to pass. Your test score is good for one year. Please note that you are not allowed to take the same test again until 90 days have passed.


When will I receive my grade?

You will receive your test score in the mail within one to two weeks of testing. Once all testing is complete, the top five grade groups will be called for an interview. Supervisors are given ten (10) working days to perform interviews and submit a name to the Civil Service Department.
