SALARY RANGE: $15.15 per hour at 25 hours per week

LOCATION: Thibodaux Area

GENERAL PURPOSE

Responsible for transporting children safely to Head Start facilities and back home, as well as on field trips. The duties also include maintaining the buses in a mechanically safe manner, maintaining the overall cleanliness and sanitation of buses, and completing all necessary paperwork.

All Transportation staff are subject to change with assignment locations based upon the need of the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Establish a professional working relationship with all Head Start staff. Exercise professionalism at all times with parents, families, and students. Perform other related duties assigned by the supervisor. Report to supervisor on time and/or when missing work with advance notification.

Bus Driver

1. Follow the policies and procedures of Lafourche Parish Government and the Head Start performance standards, as well as the written transportation plan.

2. Responsible for transporting children safely to Head Start classrooms/centers and back home. Bus drivers are morally, as well as legally responsible for transporting children using every precaution for their maximum protection.

3. Responsible for conducting pre-trip and post-trip checks on buses and special equipment.

4. Responsible for reporting regularly and punctually in the operation of routes; must be consistent in daily work habits.

5. Responsible for accurate recording of time sheets and forwarding to their supervisor, accordingly.

6. Responsible for notifying Center Director and Supervisor if unable to report for duty. Notifies Supervisor of impending absences and/or tardiness.

7. Responsible for notifying the Facilities Manager of any mechanical failure or other issues relating to the operation and performance of the buses.

8. Responsible for developing and updating bus routes as necessary; notifying supervisor of changes as they occur.

9. Responsible for ensuring that appropriate sanitary practices are enforced while transporting children and after children disembark from buses.

10. Responsible for maintaining orderly conduct of all passengers and uses the appropriate procedures for reporting disorderly passengers. Maintains appropriate disciplinary policies on the bus at all times in accordance with Lafourche Parish Head Start policies and procedures.

11. Responsible for transporting children for field trips; responsible for bringing bus for routine/special maintenance as directed by supervisor.

12. Responsible for knowing and obeying state and local traffic laws, rules and regulations governing motor vehicle operation.

13. Responsible for accurately recording all mileage for each designated route. Complete and submit required reports within specified times.

14. Responsible for maintaining buses in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, including first aid kits, fire extinguishers and warning devices.

15. Responsible for completing Daily Driver/Monitor and Driver/Teacher Boarding Checklist and Weekly Bus Logs. Responsible for completing weekly job status reports. Submit paperwork at the end of each week. Responsible for completing all extraordinary paperwork and reports as needed.

16. Responsible for notifying supervisor, Facilities Manager and Lafourche Parish Risk Manager of any and all accidents or incidents.

17. Responsible for ensuring that all equipment is mechanically safe, reliable, clean and in compliance with state and local regulations.

18. Meets all general and specific health requirements as prescribed by federal, state or local laws, guidelines, rules or regulations in accordance with maintaining the proper safety standards. Responsible for remaining up to date on all trainings, inspections, licenses and physicals.

19. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

20. Ensures absolute confidentiality with respect to information and records concerning families, children, and staff.

Cleaning/Sanitation

Must:

1. Clean and sanitize entire inside of bus after each route.

2. Clean outside of bus as needed.

3. Ensure that all windows are clean and free of any obstruction.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Attend workshops, conferences, seminars as related to transportation duties or responsibilities.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:

A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

B) Experience in the transportation field

C) Must be twenty-one years of age

2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A) Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, program participants, and the general public.

B) Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

C) Ability to handle stressful situations.

D) Ability to be able to work on a computer

E) Knowledge of transportation/school bus operations/diesel maintenance

F) Ability to successfully complete an approved Defensive Driving Course

G) Ability to successfully complete an approved First Aid/CPR course

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A) A valid Louisiana driver’s license with CDL endorsement

B) Must have an acceptable and safe driving record as provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles

C) Must be able to pass a motor vehicle and criminal records check, physical exam, drug                  screening, and tuberculosis testing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to lift and carry 35 pounds or more, must be able to climb into and out of a school bus, operate emergency door opening device and assist passengers from the vehicle in emergency situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include both close and far vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to work in weather ranges of extreme humidity, heat and cold.

The work environment varies from the classroom environment to outdoors.  The noise level is moderately noisy.

Head Start’s primary responsibility is to the children we service and the use of cell phones during hours of operation can become a distraction. Therefore, cell phones are not permitted in the classrooms or surrounding areas during classroom hours of operation.
